Mentor Training

Separation of Church and State

 and Faith, Gender, Political Issues

Church and State

Mentors must understand and abide by the rules of the school at which they volunteer.  They are not permitted to evangelize or pray while on school property as it is against the law.  Modeling a faith-based life is permitted at all times. All mentors understand that violation of this could result in termination of the Kidz Connected program at the school.

Any meeting of the student and mentor outside of the normal weekly meeting, providing it takes place off of school property, may afford the opportunity to discuss each other's faith.

Mentor/Student Interactions of Church & State/Faith

In accordance with the U.S. Department of Education guidelines, it is important to remember the following during a mentoring session:

  1. No praying with a student or encouraging them to pray

  2. No preaching about your faith to students

  3. No prohibiting or discouraging speech or other activity initiated by the student simply because it is of religious content or nature.  The student does not need to adhere to Church and State guidelines.

  4. No infringing on the rights of the students and their families by speaking about religion, praying, or reading scripture.

  5. When at school, mentors will act like the school staff and follow their rules at all times.

Gender and Political Issues

While it is not against the law to talk about gender differences, preferences, or political views, Kidz Connected holds the viewpoint as follows:

  1. If a student offers an opinion or orientation to these topics, they are to be permitted to say whatever they view as “their truth”.

  2. It is appropriate to ask the student where they came to these beliefs so you can better understand them, but you must not share your beliefs on this topic.

  3. If asked directly your opinion on gender or politics, you are not permitted to give it.  Instead, simply state: “Kidz Connected thinks everyone can have their own ideas about these things. Let's talk about topics that aren't as tricky in today's world.”

  4. Any questions or ideas about this should be discussed with Kidz Connected before deviating from this prescribed answer.
